What each contender needs
Mbappé (6) — France favourite, milestone in play
France meet Paraguay in R16 M90 on Saturday 4 July at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia). France won Group I with three wins from three, +8 goal difference, and beat Sweden 3-0 in R32. Mbappé has produced 2.61 xG from 13 shots on target — he is generating the volume, so more goals typically follow when France run through weaker defences.
The next goal Mbappé scores also ties him with Messi on 19 career WC goals — Messi’s current all-time men’s WC record. That is a narrative-and-market dividend rolled into one.
Mbappé told Sky Sports on 30 June: "I’m fully aware of what’s at stake, where I am and what I have to do."
Messi (6) — Argentina co-leader, quiet path to more
Argentina meet Cape Verde in the last R32 tie tonight (3 July, Miami, 6:00 pm ET / 8:00 am AEST Saturday). Argentina have not conceded at the tournament since a single Group J goal; Cape Verde have not lost yet but generate very little forward xG. The likely shape is a comfortable Argentina win with Messi in the middle of everything — and he already has six of Argentina’s eight goals in North America.
Messi enters the market at the shorter price for a reason: cleaner path, tighter defence behind him.
Kane (5) — England, up against the Azteca altitude
England meet Mexico in R16 M92 at the Estadio Azteca (Sunday 5 July, 8:00 pm ET / 10:00 am AEST Monday). Kane’s DR Congo brace took him past Pelé’s career WC tally to 13 career WC goals. But England’s manager Thomas Tuchel warned Sky Sports on 2 July: "My understanding is we cannot adapt to the altitude." The Azteca sits at ~2,240 m — 40 minutes of hard running there is not the same as 40 minutes at sea level.
The market has Kane at 8.50 — a real chance if England go deep and stumble on altitude in single ties.
Haaland (5) — Norway v Brazil is the hinge
